The short photography course was designed to establish an interest in the photography as an art and a way to record history. The course is aimed at young people who have little or no knowledge of the skill.
Young people from the Traveller communities attended this 2 day course and developed their artistic skill along side more technical skills of photography.
The first day was an introduction to a DSLR camera and encouraging creativity. Most of the young people had either never used one or had never used the manual settings.
To break the ice, the young people chose a word to spell. The challenge was to spell the word using the camera and without taking photos of actual letters. The young people excelled in their creativity used everything from fruit to door handles to create shapes for their letters.
The second session was more focussed on technical skills.
Each setting was discussed and the young people were set challenges to produce images using different depths of field (using the FStops) and ISO settings to adjust quality according to lighting.
The most enjoyed and fun part of this session was working with long exposures. The camera was set on the bulb setting and taken into complete darkness, where the young people had a chance to “paint with lights”.
